Celebrity Look-a-Likes

I’m starting to become even more obsessed with Days than I already am.  Scary, I know.  But, someone’s got to do it so that the rest of you people, who actually have lives, can feel comfortable knowing that Days is properly being worshiped at all times.  No need to thank me.

I'm starting to see Day's characters where ever I go.  So, here are the celebrity and Day's cast member matches that I've noticed.  Yes, I know that actors often change their hair/other physical attributes frequently.  This isn't meant to be an all inclusive, no exceptions list.  It's just my observations.

This one came to me when I went to see "The Dark Knight"

Christian Bale      Jay Kenneth Johnson
Celebrity: Christian Bale (Actor, Batman)
Day's Cast Member: Jay Kenneth Johnson (Philip Kiriakis)

The Olympics had to preempt Days, but I think that's only because Blake was pulling double duty.

Michael Phelps   Blake Berris
Celebrity: Michael Phelps (Olympic swimmer)
Day's Cast Member: Blake Berris (Nick Fallon)

Maybe it's the hair....but this one is way to obvious.

Meg Ryan    Mary Beth Evans
Celebrity: Meg Ryan (Actress)
Day's Cast Member: Mary Beth Evans (Kayla Johnson)

This one started out with Tamara and Christie resembling each other, but then I remembered who they both look like!

Drea de Matteo  Tamara Braun Christie Clark
Celebrity: Drea de Matteo (Actress, Sopranos)
Day's Cast members: Tamara Braun (Ava Vitali) and                                                                                                                          Christie Clark (Carrie Brady)

Classy, sassy, and very sexy!

Dianne Keaton  Laurne Koslow
Celebrity: Dianne Keaton (Actress)
Day's Cast Member: Lauren Koslow (Kate Roberts)

Maybe this is the reason I've always thought Max would make a great romantic leading man.

Johnny Depp  Darin Brooks
Celebrity: Johnny Depp (Actor, "Pirates of the Caribbean")
Day's Cast Member: Darin Brooks (Max Brady)

Agree with me?  Have some of your own?  Let me know!

Cheers,

Laurisa

Think you're a Days fan?  Here's a tank top that Amy made to show her support of Days!  It combines an awesome 80's vintage picture of Drake on the front with the essential catch phrase, "That's a Fact!" on the back.  I love it!  Take a look are her handy work and then let me know some of the greatest things that you've seen or done in support of Days of our Lives.

Emmy Extravaganza- Hits!

Emmy Hits!

Tony and I assembled a bang-up team of experts on all things TV to rate how people looked, acted, and won at the 35th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards.  Ok, so it was just the two of us, but what we lack in actual knowledge, we make up for in passion!  Read on to hear who we picked as the best of the best.

Best Dressed Male

Laurisa (on Days): My vote goes to Thaao Penghlis.  He dressed like he came there to win and I thought he looked great.  He looked sophisticated without looking stuffy and fun without looking careless.  Of course, when you have a leading lady as beautiful as Leann Hunley on your arm, you better bring the good style to match!

Laurisa (in general): This is kind of a shock for me, but I’m going with Jason Cook (Matt Hunter, General Hospital)!  He did everything against my taste.  He was scruffy, and I like clean shaven.  He wore a bright colored tie, which always screams politician to me.  But, when he walked out on that stage, I had a stop and stare moment.  Jason looks all grown up and age agrees with our little Shawn D!

Tony (on Days): Whereas James Scott probably could’ve worn a burlap sack with a bow tie and made it work, I gave him my vote anyway. He always has an air of sophistication and class, but looked especially regal for the big event. Sure, we’re used to seeing E.J. in a suite provided by the wardrobe department, but this was James’ pick and he did well!

Tony (in general): I thought Montel Williams looked great! His suite was very classy, yet simple – perfect for the Emmys. I also liked his tie. It was the ideal combo for a guy who comes across very sincere. A+ to you Monetl!

Bested Dressed Female

Laurisa (on Days): Nadia Bjorlin.  On an evening where so many ladies tried and FAILED MISERABLY to wear white, Nadia totally pulled it off.  She really made me think of the classic movie stars.  She was part Jean Harlow and part Sophia Loren.  Nadia literally looked like she had been dipped in diamonds and crystals.  Beautiful!

Laurisa (in general): Debbi Morgan (Dr. Angie Hubbard, All My Children).  She got her outfit all kinds of right.  The fit was very flattering, yet it looked still comfortable!  Her jewels were a good accent without overpowering.  But, the hands-down thing that sealed the deal for me was that AMAZING cobalt blue color.  It’s was basically a crime to Darnell Williams and Cornelius Smith that they had to stand next to her for so long.

Tony (on Days): Although Leann Hunley looked radiant, Tamara Braun was my Emmy winner when it came to Days’ fashion. She had a great fusion of old school Hollywood glamor meets a Greek goddess. In a sea of white dresses this year, many of which should have stayed on the sales rack, she wore one as it should have been worn – simple, sleek and sexy.

Tony (in general): Sure, she’s on Days, but Shelley Henning stood out amongst all of the other daytime divas. Her black and white patterned dress verged on being “too much,” but she pulled it off! It was young and fun, yet elegant enough for the awards. She was also smart by simply wearing her hair down and accenting it all with a tiny, red clutch. Shelley may not have been nominated for anything this year, but, in my eyes, she was an Emmy outfit winner!

Best Dressed Duo

Laurisa (on Days): I'm cheating a little bit on this one, but Judi Evans looked fabulous.  Great hair, appropriate make-up, stylish jewels, and a flattering dress is a great blue color.&reminded me of Princess Di. But the thing that pushed her over the edge was her gorgeous date, her 12 year old son. He looked absolutely dapper and so proud of his mom.

Laurisa (in general): My vote goes to Regis and Joy Philbin.  Joy took a page out of Debbi Morgan’s Book-O-Color and picked a wonderful royal purple dress that complimented her red hair and fair skin beautifully!  Regis looked properly coiffed and polished in a great suit and black tie.  They just looked like genuinely happy people.  Any why should they be?  Regis has been on TV for 326 years and he got the “Lifetime Achievement” Award!

Tony (on Days): My duo is actually a trio as it didn’t get any hotter than Nadia Bjorlin, Alison Sweeney and Arianne Zuker! Seriously, when they came out to present an award it was like seeing the Charlie’s Angels of Soapland – great hair, great clothes and killer smiles. The greenish color on Alison looked amazing, Nadia just looked all shades of Hollywood glam in her beaded gown and Arianne simply rocked the simple black dress and the up do! Days needs to work in a ball or some special event so we can see these ladies all dressed up again soon!

Tony (in general): Brandon Buddy and Kristen Alderson (Cole Thornhart and Starr Manning, One Life to Live) looked great together! Both were dressed age appropriate with a touch of daytime sexiness. Kristen especially shined in her outfit and proved that our little girl is all grown up (she started playing Starr ten years ago when she was seven)!  If they’re any indication of the future of soaps we should all be in good shape!

Best Acceptance Speech

Laurisa: I’m going with Ellen Degeneres.  Everything she said, I believed.  She was genuinely honored to win.  And, despite the fact that she’s quick headed for “Oprah Land” Ellen really is shocked every time that she’s recognized for how cool she really is.

Tony: Jeanne Cooper (Katherine Chancellor , The Young and The Restless) gave a speech that simply rocked! It was heartfelt, funny and not too long! In my book, those are three winning qualities more people should shoot for when they’re at the podium.

Best Reaction to an Award

Laurisa: Tom Pelphrey.  It seems cliché to say that the award meant a lot to him after the recent death of his father, but it did.  And I could tell.  Good for you, Tom!  You make us all proud!

Tony: Again I would have to go with Jeanne Cooper! She seemed so sincere and humbled to win. And I think she was as surprised as the rest of us as she was a semi-underdog because most people seemed to have their money on her co-star Michelle Stafford. But I think it’s awesome she won (even if it disproved my prediction) because to give fresh and awesome performances worthy of an Emmy after 35 years in the same role is pretty amazing.

Best On Stage Surprise (Could be a reunion, a joke, or a prop)

Laurisa: The Shelle 1.0 reunion!  I have a special place in my heart for Kirsten Storms and Jason Cook.  When they were announced as a couple again, I cheered for all those lucky GH fans that get to witness the chemistry that is not Shelle, but “Kirson” (Kirsten + Jason).

Tony: I loved the opening! More so I loved Sherri Shepherd’s journey through Pine Valley. She was absolutely hysterical! To top it off, Susan Lucci sneaking out of the jail cell was priceless. La Lucci not only has an Emmy, but a great sense of humor too!

Best Camera Pan Surprise (Whoa!  Did you see who was in the audience?!?)

Laurisa: I didn’t have a big shock.  But, I do think that the best camera pan was when the camera caught Kristoff St John’s little daughter standing up on her chair, watching her dad accept his award. She was just a little girl who thinks that her dad is Superman- just like every little girl should.

Tony: You know, I didn’t have many major “wow, I can’t believe they were there moments” this year. It seemed like the regular daytime crowd, minus a few Days cast members I can’t believe weren’t there *cough Deidre Hall* Maybe I just missed her.

Best Presenter(s)

Laurisa: I thought that Farah Fath and Jean Paul did the near impossible.  They made one of those awkward pre-scripted banter skits actually funny.  Beautiful, talented, funny….  never mind, I hate them.

Tony: Although I loved seeing my Days’ girls, Nadia, Ali and Arianne, I thought it was a nice treat to see Van Hansis and Jake Silbermann (Luke Snyder and Noah Mayer, As The World Turns) present an award together. It proved that times are changing for the better and super couples no longer have to be solely Ken and Barbie – they can be Ken and Ken or Barbie and Barbie! Side note: Van’s orange was a little much though, but at least he’d be safe while jogging at night in his tux.

Best Underdog Win

Laurisa: I’ll come right out and say that this category was supposed to be for Rachel Melvin.  Darn it though, I’m proud to give my vote to Jeanne Cooper (Katherine Chancellor, Young and the Restless).  She’s the longest tenured actress on YR, she’s a feisty as can be, and she’s never won an Emmy!  Until now…..that is.

Tony: Rachel Ray beat Ellen and The View for Best Talk Show (Entertainment)?! Say what!? That was pretty shocking. I would have picked Jeanne Cooper again, but I didn’t want to be redundant!

TiVo Award (You didn’t watch it before, but after the Emmy’s you gotta check it out)!

Laurisa: One Life to Live. First, if the show is half as good as their montage reel, I think I may have to add another member to my “Season Pass” family.  Second, they won for writing which is super cool.  Third, Jean Paul is on that show and he’s all sorts of dreamy.

Tony: Although I have my hands full with Days,  I’m totally interested in checking out One Life to Live a little more and perhaps As The World Turns. I do tend to  flip to All My Children a lot, but usually zone out after that. However, I may need to start power booking my DVR.

So that's the "Hits"!  Of course, we couldn't be all hugs and rainbows.  Nope.  Tony and I had some not-so-favorites too.  Head over to Tony's Blog to check out our "Emmy Misses".    Be sure to leave feedback to let us know what you think!

Cheers,
Laurisa

Bringing Up Baby: Chelsea's Infertility

Choosing not to have children is one thing.  But, physically not being able to have kids is a complete tragedy.  It’s unfair to any man or woman who has to go through it.  So, I don't want to see like I'm sensationalizing infertility.  But, in the realm of Soap Operas, Days may have found a very interesting way to develop a story line around the condition.   The writers can do a lot with the story because they picked the perfect character to play it and it is a story line with multiple layers.

First, Chelsea’s never been one of those characters who talked about growing up and having a big family.   She was certainly missing a sympathy chip during the Artimus and Demarquete story line.  And, she grew up as an only child.  So, we get to see the story line evolve from the beginning.  The very first time that Chelsea ever thought about having children is the moment when she found out that she couldn’t.

Then there’s her family.  I loved the way Bo immediately knew that Chelsea would be at the hospital and went to comfort her.  It reminded me of the scene a few weeks ago between Chelsea and Hope.  My heart really breaks for Chelsea.  Rachel Melivn, Peter Reckell, and Kristian Alfonso have the potential to bring such depth to this story line.   Hi-fives for all three of them!

Next, I know I’m asking too much, but if the writers actually remember history correctly, Chelsea Brady was once Chelsea Benson- the happily adopted daughter of loving parents who did not give birth to her.  Chelsea always speaks very highly of the Bensons and by all indication, had nothing less than a wonderful life with her adopted parents.    Eventually, she should get to the realization that infertility doesn’t automatically equal no family.

Finally, there's the possibility of having a surrogate carry her child.  By the time Chelsea finds the right guy, Ciara will probably have been SORASed enough to carry her half sister's baby.  That's a SL that has "soap opera" written all over it.  Especially if they are in love with the same man!!  (Sorry, I can only be serious for a short amount of time )

Let me know what you think!

Cheers,
Laurisa

Character Make-Over Needed ASAP

I was watching the recent scenes with Nick and it struck me that this Horton boy needs a serious make over.  Sure, he's coiffed, committed, and granted-   BUT, something about Nick is a little....well....not as exciting as the Nick that we first met.
Remember this guy    Nick Fallon  yeah, I want him back.  Here's a few suggestions for a Nick make-over

1.  Stop being a doormat for Chelsea.
I'm sure that Nick is fascinated with Chelsea and thrilled that he landed the hottest girl at the prom.  But, I question whether or not Nick really loves Chelsea.  It seems like he's more in love with having a girlfriend.  She isn't very into him as a boyfriend, and Nick needs to realize that, pack up his beakers and test tubes, and move on with someone else.

2.  Get as excited about life as he is about his work.
Why is he so pumped about being able to make the work green thanks to a carbon thingy, but when it comes to people in his own family (Hope, Maggie, Ali) he doesn't seem to have much to do with them?  Family connections is what makes Days great and this character doesn't seem to belong to a family right now.

3.  Make a friend.
Oh how I miss little Abigail!  She really was a good friend to Nick and I enjoyed their interactions.  Something tells me that if Nick had someone to confide in, problem #1 would be going away.  Come to think of it...if it were Abby, that would take care of problem #2.

Cheers,
Laurisa

Holy crap!! Someone remembered that Days of Our Lives was still on TV. And, it's not just someone, but Emmy voters. AND it's not that it's still on TV, but that it has GREAT ACTORS!   Yeah!!!  (insert happy dance/ high five/ celebratory chest bump here).

Thaao Penghlis Days of our Lives
Lead Actor: Thaao Penghlis
I did a little digging and I found that Thaoo was nominated (ie- he submitted his work) for Andre. Gotta say, I don't think he belongs in the "lead" category, but his work as Andre was some of the best soap villain work I've seen in a long time. I totally agree here.

Judi Evans Days of our Lives  Judi Evans Days of our Lives
Supporting Actress: Judi Evans
Judi is listed as Bonnie/Adrianne. Since these awards were for 2007, I'm pretty sure that her goodbye scene with Steve wouldn't be eligible. But, the cool stuff where she helped him break out of the asylum was! I think that if Judi was smart and submitted one scene as Bonnie and one as scene as Adrianne, there's no way the voters could ignore her range as an actress.

Darin Brooks Days of Our Lives
Younger Actor: Darin Brooks
Darin was a shock to me too- but a good shock.  I didn't have him picked as someone who would get a nod (shows what I know!)  But, Darin has so much charisma when he's on screen that I'm glad he got a nod.   Doesn't it make your head spin to think of what this guy could do if he was given a story line that doesn't want to make viewers throw up?

Rachel Melvin Days of our Lives
Younger Actress: Rachel Melvin
Then there's my girl Rachel.  I just lover her.   It blows my mind to think how complex of a character Rachel created in such a short period of time.  Chelsea Brady has come a long way.  Personally, I give a lot of credit to Rachel for this because she was handed some HORRIBLE story lines.  Just think, her first major story line was accidentally causing the death of her little brother and then scheming to try to break up Bo and Hope!  There's no reason in the world why any viewer should like Chelsea!   Yet, she's becoming one of the few actors who I trust will somehow make any story line work.   (Too much praise?  Yeah, I know.  I'm a big dork.  I can't help it.)

What's your take on it?

Cheers,
Laurisa

First Real Salem Experience
So I figure that I better practice what I preach and try to introduce Days to one of my friends.  So, I talked my husband, Nick, into watching Friday's (April 25th) episode with me.  During the episode, John and Nicole went on their "date", Max and Stephanie tried to have sex, and Roman and Bo helped rescuse Bo, Hope, Steve, and Kayla from the Vitali compound.  Here are some of this highlights:.

Nick: (Seeing that Max is waiting tables at the Brady Pub) Didn’t he used to own a garage or something?

Me: Yeah, but he invested a bunch of money in a bogus business and got taken.

Nick: So, he’s a waitress now?

Nick (during a commercial break): Does anyone ever have a dog on this show?

Me: No, I don’t think anyone would have time for a dog.

Nick: That Stefano (pronounced: ste –FAHH - no) guys does. He’s always home. I never see him outside of his house. Plus, he’s usually kinda cranky and could use some companionship.

Nick: That new John reminds me of Jim Carrey when he turn into Hank from “Me, Myself, and Irene” (warning, there is some adult language in the link, but the comparison is unmistakable!).

Nick: (watching Marlena confront Nicole about the date with John): ohhh….she’s not a good actress is she?

Me:  No, actually she's supposed to sound that ditzy.  Her character is kinda a gold digger.

Nick's Favorite line:

Not too surprising, Nick found John to be the most enjoyable character.  Nick's favorite line was when John told Nicole, “That would be like trying to convince me that you’re a virgin."

Hope your friends are enjoying Days!  Let me know how it is going!

Cheers,
Laurisa

Take You Friend to Salem Day
Here's your mission- if you choose to accept it.

Pick a day (or two) over the next two weeks and introduce Days of Our Lives to a friend or family member.  Be sure to help with back story as necessary.  But, let them enjoy the show.  Then, leave me some feedback to let me know how it went!

Daytime Emmy Announcement
TiVo Alert!!!
Ok, I don't mean to get too excited, but TVGuide is reporting that Day's very own Alison Sweeney and Bryan Dattilio (along with some other soap stars) are going to be appearing on "The View" to officially announce the Daytime Emmy nomination on Wednesday, April 30th.   Both actors are OVER DUE for an Emmy nod so I'm a little giddy at the idea that they might have just chosen the perfect people to announce the nomination.  No self-respecting producer would resist the urger to have a live reaction from the star, the minute that their name is called.  I'm just saying.....

Scroll down to my March 13th blog entry read more about the actors that Days submitted for pre-nominations as well as my take on their best work and their odds at winning the gold!

What's in a Name?
Like any family, the Bradys, Hortons, Kiriakises, and even DiMeras like to honor family members by naming their children after relatives.  So, I wanted to start a list of names....but I need your help!  If you have a name that I need to add to the list, let me know!

Brady Family

Kayla Caroline Brady is the daughter of Shawn and Caroline Brady.  Her middle name is her mother's first name.(thanks Tony)

Eric Roman Brady is the son of Roman Brady and Marlena Evans.  He was named after his Great Uncle Eric and his dad, Roman. (thanks daysfan09 and Tony)

Interview with Tony- Part 2

Welcome back!  Our drinks with Chelsea were fantastic.  Turns out that she actually does have gills, thus she was able to breath in that swamp all those years ago.  He had to get a few martinis in her, but Tony eventually got her to show us her scars!  But, that’s not all that is cool about Tony.  Here’s more of my interview with Mr. Two Scoops:

Tony on Tony …

Laurisa: While you play a scoops columnist in soap land, what do you do in real life to pay for all those vodka tonics?

Tony: Well, it’s nothing as glamorous as Two Scooping let me tell you! I work at a nonprofit research clinic doing all sorts “fun” administrative/HR type things. Yes, paper cuts are plentiful!

Laurisa: What company would find the most need for your talents: Titan, Mythic, Basic Black, Salem U Hospital, or the Salem PD?

Tony: I’d say the Salem PD. I don’t know much about police procedures so right off the bat I’d fit right in. I could definitely stumble into solving a crime with the best of them!  And, if I did a bad job or didn’t do it at all, I’d probably be promoted. Besides, I can make a decent cup of coffee and am pretty verse in water cooler conversations therefore I could probably find out “whodunit” a lot quicker than the vets!

Laurisa: Have you had any brush with soap fame?

Tony: Actually I’ve had a few! I met both Dylan Fergus (Noah Bennett, Passions) and Van Hansis (Luke Snyder, As the World Turns) way before they were “soap stars” and  I was introduced to Rebecca Herbst and Tava Smiley (Elizabeth Spencer and ex-Chloe Morgan, General Hospital) at an event in 2001 (one of them was very nice, the other not so much, ha-ha)! I’ve also seen the same several “soapsters” a few times randomly on the streets of New York including Colin Egglesfield (Josh Madden, All My Children), Bree Williamson (Jessica Buchanan, One Life to Live) and Kassie DePaiva and James DePaiva (Blair Cramer and ex-Max Holden, also One Life). My personal fav was seeing Ellen Wheeler (ex-Marley Hudson Another World, now Guiding Light’s Executive Producer)! I love her on AW so it was a real treat!

Laurisa: Excuse me while I trip over all those names you just dropped.  Ok, back on track.  What’s the one question that you hoped I wouldn’t ask?  Just Kidding!   What is your most anti-soap fan activity, the thing that people would be surprised to find out about you?

Tony: God, I feel so boring because I had to think long and hard about this! I guess the fact that I write isn’t a surprise, but I’m actually editing a book I finished last year with high hopes that, once I shop it around, it gets published! Fingers and toes are majorly crossed! Aside from that, I love “urban hiking,” as my friends and I call it. Basically we start out in the morning at Battery Park (the southern most point in Manhattan) and walk north until we hit Central Park and back again. Sometimes we ramble through the streets or simply head up the waterfront parks. It’s great exercise, fun to people watch and helps us discover cool, new places we’d otherwise probably never know about!

Tony on Randomness …

Laurisa: Well since our soap jobs are so hard, you obviously need to find time to relax.  So, what’s your favorite comfort food?

Tony: I’m pretty comfort food fickle, and whereas it’s usually something chocolaty, lately it’s been Turkey Hill Lemon Duetto Ice Cream. It’s a basically creamy vanilla ice cream swirled with Italian lemon ice. So. Dang. Good!

Laurisa:  Who would be the first person you’d vote out of your office? (you don’t have to reveal names, but chances are they don’t read your article anyway)

Tony: I got the most amusement out of this question! Ok, I’m not trying to be mean, but since I have the green light, I’d vote “Stinky” out of the office. Aside from having an ego the size of King Kong, maybe bigger, and aside from the fact that he always spells my name as T-o-n-i, even though my e-mail address is tonys…, I have an outgoing e-mail signature with my name spelled “Tony” in it and I’ve politely told him about this several times over the last two years – aside from ALL of that, he simply smells – very bad! Ok, maybe saying that does make me mean.

Laurisa: When traveling, what is the essential item in your carry on bag?

Tony: I have to have my Zune (Dell’s version of an iPod)! I’m far from antisocial, but I always get stuck next to a screaming baby or a “Chatty Kathy” with a fear of flying. Considering I have my own (minor) flight qualms, I don’t want to hear stories of gloom and doom while soaring through the friendly skies.

Laurisa: Do you have any strange fears, quirks, or phobias?

Tony: Don’t ask me why, but I have an irrational phobia of having my hand ripped off by a car engine. 100%, no clue where that stemmed from! Before I sold my car when I moved to New York, the gang at Jiffy Lube made a killing as I would go there for everything! As far as quirks that are less odd go, to quote you, “I write for an online soap site,” ha-ha. I also have to wear shoes when I write and never use black pens to edit. Like I said, I’m dorky.

Laurisa: Is there anything I forgot to ask?

Tony: You forgot to ask me how much I love working with you! SO much! And, because I gushed now, I used up all my nice points for the week therefore my next column can be extra catty! And, for that, I thank you!

Meet my fellow Two-Scooper, Tony!

Just in case you were wondering how completely boring we actually are, Tony and I decided to lift the veil of suspicion and pronounce to all the world that we are hopeless TV-aholics.   We’re thrilled that we get to write a column and at least 8 people read it.  (Shout out to our families!) So, here’s more about our terribly exciting lives.  (Head over to Tony's blog to read what juicy gossip he got out of me)

Tony on Two Scoops …

Laurisa: Who was the first person that you told you are now contractually obligated to watch Days of our Lives by way of becoming a Two Scoops columnist?

Tony: Not to sound all “awe,” but I told my mom. She’s not only the one who got me into Days, but, from my mild to wild ideas, she’s been my biggest supporter throughout the years and I haven’t made that the easiest job!

Laurisa:  For those who don’t know, the article is set up to be a point-counter point opinion of Days.  There’s a male and then a female perspective.  Given that set up, what the one point/character/story line that you would say we disagree on the most?

Tony: Again, not to sound all “lovey dovey,” “let’s hold hands and sing a song,” but I don’t think there’s been a major, “I can’t believe she said THAT moment” (yet)! Ok, I came back to this one after tossing it around a little, but what I came up with isn’t all that scandalous. I remember you picked Kate for the “Most Overly Utilized Character” during the 2007 Alex North Memorial Awards and I was like, “wha?” In all fairness, I’m a Kate fan and love Lauren Kaslow. I think she balances out her age group as she’s not as squeaky clean as the rest of them and doesn’t even try to cover it up. Actually, she’s more ballsy than most of the guys in Salem!

Tony on Days …

Laurisa: How long have you watched Days?

Tony: You know, it’s funny, I can’t think of a time when I didn’t in some capacity. As a child I would sit and color while my mom watched it and it sort of evolved from there. Of course, school and then college preempted my viewing a lot … mostly because I couldn’t figure out how to set the dang VCR, but I kept up with it via soap mags. Once I got a DVR a few years ago, I’ve been back in the Salem swing of things ever since.

Laurisa: What is your most memorable Days moment?

Tony: Hands down – watching “Marlena” (really Samantha Evans) be killed by the Salem Strangler! Granted, I was very young, but remember being so sad! I wish I had known back then that Days eventually resurrects everyone so it wouldn’t have been so traumatizing, ha-ha!

Laurisa: If you could change one thing about Days, what would it be?

Tony: I don’t know if I’d change anything, per say, but I definitely liked the quicker pace set a few weeks ago and would love to see it picked up again. I enjoy “having to” pay attention in fear I might miss something – makes things more entertaining than the same old repetitious dialogue and lengthy flashbacks (often from the day before).  I also think, if possible, luring back some more “fan favorites” would spruce things up! That and perhaps adding some new, more diverse characters, to the cast would be nice.

Laurisa: Do you have a favorite all time character?

Tony: Not to be all “I have two,” but I do, ha-ha, I have two! One is Alice Horton, who I used refer to as my “TV Grandma” as she reminded my so much of my own – kind, supportive, spunky and a dang good baker! The other one is Kristin Blake, how opposite ends of the spectrum is that!? I’ve loved Eileen Davidson since her days on Santa Barbara and that only bloomed when she landed in Salem. I loved honorable social working Kristin. I loved crazy, obsessed Kristin. I just loved Kristin! From good to bad to just plain ugly (hello, Susan Banks), Eileen just knocked my socks off!

Laurisa: Presuming that you could have it fixed in time to watch you other favorite shows, what Days moment made you literally want to throw your remote at your TV?

Tony: Although this is semi-recent, the first thing that popped into my head was the Belle/Philip romp above the Brady Pub. No offense intended towards “Phelle” fans and I liked the idea of Belle’s princess tiara being tarnished a little, but after all her dreaming of Shawn on her wedding day to Phil and all the other times and all the things he put her through even the lame excuse they “still had residual feelings for each other” didn’t softened the blow for me – or my TV!

Tony on Soaps …

Laurisa: Are there any other soaps in your life besides Days?

Tony: Not really. I dabbled in the Bold and the Beautiful and Guiding Light a summer or two during high school (many years ago, I might add) and, in 2003, I started to watch All My Children and One Life to Live as they were on SoapNet after Days. Since I got my trusty DVR I’ve been more of a one soap kinda guy and only catch glimpses of AMC and/or OLTL if they’re on while I’m channel surfing. Truth be told, I used to watch Another World, but my huge passion was Sunset Beach! I loved that show! Aside from the show itself, part of the appeal was that I always wanted to write for soaps and I thought it was awesome to see one from the beginning. I’m a dork like that!

Laurisa: Days has been on the air for over 40 years and garnered some of the most devoted fans in daytime.  What does it take to be a true soap fan?

Tony: Good question! Wow! Ok, to me, four things come to mind. One, you need to be flexible and try to roll with the punches –accept recasts, fan favorite exits, history rewrites, boring weeks and such as best as you can. Sometimes they suck, but they’re a part of the game. Second, you have to have a sense of humor and not take things too seriously (it’s a show after all)! For example, when a character “dies” and comes back for the third or forth time you just have to laugh and not tune out because of the absurdity. Third, you gotta have patience. Soaps make us wait – wait for couples to get together, wait for secrets to be revealed, heck, they make us wait for a sentence to be finished because they cut to a commercial! Finally, you have to simply love the genre. Soaps are uniquely amazing! Not only do the actors work hard all year (like most of us), but how many shows produce fresh, scripted material each day and actually make it to the 20, 30, 40 year mark? Very few! They’re also full of history – like time capsules for fashion and the social issues that each decade brings. I, for one, wear my “I heart soaps” badge proudly.

Laurisa: You’re throwing a dinner party.  Besides inviting me, what soap characters would you invite?  Remember, all these people have to sit at the same table!

Tony: Clam chowder and cheese fries with the Bradys would be a ton of laid back fun, but I’d go for more excitement! Ok, let’s see … we’d sit beside each other, of course, so we could gossip about everything. I’d pick Chelsea Brady to be on my other side as her sarcastic remarks would keep us in stitches. Plus, we’d be the trio going out for beers/snacks afterwards because we were too busy refereeing to eat because of the other guests (and she could get us free grub at the Brady Pub)! The three of us would dominate one side of the table.

The rest would consist of the following: I’d invite non-comatose Stefano DiMera just to witness if he died and came back to life between the appetizers and entrée. He’d sit at one of the ends of the table. To his right would be feisty Erica Kane (from All My Children). We could place bets on whether she and Stefano would be engaged by the end of the meal. Next to her would be Nicole Walker! I mean, really, those two gold digging hellcats together would be a must see event. Next to her would be E.J. Wells. I invited him simply for your eye candy enjoyment and would even have him seated across from you! Of course, he can make one heck of a good toast too! Finally, at the other head of the table would be “good” ole’ J.R. Ewing (from Dallas). Seriously, a brassy Texan oil tycoon with a drawl and an Italian mob boss who rolls his R’s sitting at the heads of the table arguing back and forth and trying to charm Erica Kane and a drunken Nicole? Fun times!

On that note, I say we take off for our imaginary cocktails with Chelsea.  While we’re out, I plan to figure out exactly how many soap stars Tony has actually come into contact with in his real life and what one item I need to bribe Tony into anything….

It's that time of year, Days fans! So, in light of all the parties that you are probably planning, here is the rundown of the pre-nominees for Days of our Lives, my personal opinion of the material that best represented their work last year, and who has a shot at making it onto the actual Emmy ballot (providing that those Emmy voters quit drinking the ABC Kool-aid)!

Lead Actor

Stephen Nichols (Steve Johnson)- While Stephen Nichols conveyed a palpable pain during Benji's death scene, I personally prefer the sarcastically comedic Steve-trying-to-act-like-a-DiMera-bot scenes with Stefano in the DiMera mansion..
Thaao Penghlis (Andre/Tony DiMera)- While I'm kinda confused by inclusion in the "lead actor" category, his best moment had to be the reign of terror, by one Andre DiMera, capped off by the terrifically terrible performance in that clown costume.
Peter Reckell (Bo Brady)- Bo was at his "Bradyest" when he's with his beloved Fancy Face.  I know that there were some great drama here, but like Stephen, I enjoy Peters comedic, playful side.  My favorite Bo Brady scene was when he "fought" with Hope over whether or not Colleen would go meet Santo- coincidentally leaving Mr. Bo Brady to go streaking around the Brady Pub.
James Scott (EJ DiMera)- James has the Mary Poppins syndrome. The guy is "practically perfect in every way". But, my favorite EJ moments are when he lets his Banks heart clash with his Dimera brain, like the scene in the hospital where Sami tells him that he'll walk again and he proclaims, "I'm trying!!!! You see? YOU SEE? But my legs are not moving!" The scene seemed painful at the time, but it was even more painful when we found out that he was faking the whole thing!
Most likely to appear on the final ballot: Stephen Nichols. While he may be a Day's pillar, he still is a transplant from another soap, which will go over well with academy voters. Additionally, he displayed both comedic and dramatic range during his brainwashing story line. Plus, he's the only one out of the bunch who's actually snagged a nod in this category before, even if it was 1988.

Lead Actress

Deidre Hall (Marlena Evans) - Marlena didn't really turn the corner for me until John's death. But, the scene where she confronted Stefano with all that "Queen of the Night" stuff? Tell him, Marlena!
Alison Sweeney (Sami Brady-Roberts-Horton-Dimera)- As much as I am enjoying the new Sami (and the lack of Kate vs. Sami scenes), I've never enjoyed her more than when she gave her heartfelt apology to John. I'll never forget her saying, "After all, you're my dad too"
Most likely to appear on the ballot
- Since Marlena really didn't start doing it for me until late in the year, I would hope that Alison Sweeney makes it on the final ballot. The rape happened right at the end of 2006, so 2007 is the first year of "mature Sami" dealing with a rape, two weddings, and a pregnancy. If Alison is ever going to be recognized for her work, this is her year. The fact that this actress has never even been nominated is a crime upon daytime.

Supporting Actor

Bryan Dattilo (Lucas Roberts) - At times, I have a hard time liking Lucas, but I never have a problem liking Bryan. His greatest moment was when he said good bye to Sami (the first time, during the divorce).  Lucas was genuinely hurt and was obviously at a loss for what to do with the constant pain.
Jay Kenneth Johnson (Phillip Kiriakis) - For me, it's the subtleties that JKJ conveys that make Phillip so delicious. In the scene where he grabbed Lauren and demanded that she, "Tell me where my baby is!" he had just the appropriate amount of crazy in his eyes to let us know that Kiriakises don't play by the rules.
Joseph Mascolo (Stefano DiMera) - It's no big secret that Joseph can do intimidation. But, it wasn't until we saw him break down in Santo's ghost's presence that we saw an actual, scared little boy. Turns out that Stefano isn't so tough after all.
Most likely to appear on the ballot: Sadly, I don't think any of these talents will be recognized by the academy. Fortunately, all of the characters on on an upswing. So, here's hoping for next year.

Supporting Actress

Judi Evans (Bonnie Lockhart/Adrienne Johnson Kiriakis) - Lord help me, but I always thought Bonnie Lockhart was a hoot. But, Adrienne was classy and sophisticated. The scene where she helped Steve escape from the mental hospital gave Judi a chance to showcase her softer side.
Mary Beth Evans (Kayla Johnson) - She had to tackle him to keep him from leaving. But, when she cried out, "I wish you never came back!"  to Steve, I wanted to reach through the TV and give Sweetness a hug.
Martha Madison (Belle Black Brady) - Martha solidified Belle as a mother. Any scene where she fights for Claire was touching, but none better than the soaked Belle that came back to Tinda Lau after the storm. My heart broke a little when Bell wondered how, "we lost her" with a look of such tragic desperation in her eyes.
Most likely to appear on the ballot- Not only is she deserving, by Martha Madison's inclusion on the ballot would be a big Smiley to TPTB that thought it was a good idea to write her off Days. Idiots.

Younger Actress

Shelley Hennig (Stephanie Johnson) - The scene where she finally confessed her rape to Cordy brought more than tears to this viewer. It brought an appreciation of a budding young actress.
Rachel Melvin (Chelsea Brady) - For my money, it doesn't get any better than when Chelsea is the spit-fire girl that takes on the world, or in one case, her jerk-half-uncle Phillip. When she teamed up with Nick to proclaim, "They're in Canada, you jerk!" Chelsea began using her spit-fire power for good.
Kristen Renton (Morgan Hollingsworth) - Y'all know I love Morgan! But, my favorite Morgan scene was when she stepped up to testify against Ford in the Dean's office when Cordy (and Stephanie) were both too scared to say anything.
Most likely to appear on the ballot: Not only should Rachel Melvin appear, but her development as a young actress means that she should flat out win. I think that Rachel is Days' best chance at an acting Emmy this season.

Younger Actor

Blake Berris (Nick Fallon) - I had to go back to the very first week of the year, by my favorite Blake performance was his "Mrs Robinson" scene with Billie. He played the part of a lost, conflicted 20-something to a "T".
Darin Brooks (Max Brady) - Max has been defined by the women that he dated. However, my favorite Max scene was with the most important woman in his life, Caroline. The line was, "Pop got the last good girl." It reminded us that Max isn't really a player, he just plays one on TV.
Matthew Florida (Ford Decker) - Ford was just a vile character. So, the scenes where Matthew made Ford seemed the most vile were the ones where he was getting ready for the date with the un-named blond rape victim, looking at himself in the mirror, marveling in his own narcissism.... (ughghg!)
Most likely to appear on the ballot: While I like them all, I don't think that either of these guys have put together a great enough Emmy-style performance in this past year.

Just in case you're wondering, each soap can only nominate up to 4 per category. It's supposed to be 3 but if there is a tie, they can nominate 4. Only those actors and/or actresses who are 25 and under are eligible for the "Younger" acting categories. An actor turning 26 in 2007 was eligible for a pre-nomination until their birth date. Basically, the performance had to be in the bag before the performer blew out those b-day candles.

Can't stop the 80's (can't stop, c-c-can't stop)
Ok, I'll admit it.  I'm a sucker for the 80's.  I wanted to move in with the Huxtables while I dated Alex P. Keaton and spent my weekends dancing to Thriller with my BFF Samantha Micelli.  So, I'm a little excited that one of my favorite 80's guilty pleasures 'American Gladiators" made a fabulously cheesy return to the air.  Now, thanks to those clever marketing people at NBC, it looks like a Gladiator V2.0 is coming to Salem.  Rumor is that Titan is going to play a bartender who serves Chlesea a few cosmopolitan martinis.  I have no idea if he can act, but the fact that he looks like a "Fitness Club Ken" is at least going to make for a laugh in a scene with Chelsea.

Happy Valentine's Day '08 everyone!  Or, as I like to call it "Day-Before-Laurisa's-Birthday-Day".  That's right, much to my husband's misfortune, I happened to celebrate my birthday on February 15th.  (I'll wait for all you guys out there to have a collective groan)  So, I have grown to like the holiday (for other reasons than flowers and candy) and thus, I thought it would be fun to mark this moment in time with a breakdown of current Days couples.

Sami and Lucas-  I'm not Lucas's biggest fan, but I do have to say that no one flatters Sami like Lucas does.  A few weeks ago he told her that if he were to make her a DVD he would say, "Good morning"  "You look beautiful today" and "I love you".  I shed a little tear for Sami.  She may have chased after her fair share of men, but Lucas is her grand prize.  When this couple is good, they are great.  Unfortunately, those moments are too far between.
Couple grade= C

  Sami and EJ-
Of course there is the white hot chemistry between the two actors; the juicy background story between the two characters who have done so much to please their families; and an adorable son.  But, as long as the writers refuse to deal with the rape, these two can't become a legitimate "supercouple" It's a shame too because these two actors are mesmerizing when they are on screen together, even if they are just reading the phone book.
Couple grade= B

Marlena and John- Not only are they both alive but, new John's "devil may care attitude" makes me stand up and cheer for this couple.  Not only is John great comic relief, but Marlena is forced to step up and become a strong woman to deal with smarmy John.  Together, they make for great TV even if it isn't the TV we're used to see from these two.
Couple grade= A-

  Belle and Shawn
- These two will soon be leaving our fair Salem, but in the mean time, fans who cheered for Shelle have an excuse to party.  The couple finally started their "happily ever after".  If they do have to leave, I'm glad that Brandon Beemer and Martha Madison have done justice to the characters that Kirsten Storms and Jason Cook originated, taking them from eager teens into matured adults.
Couple grade= B

  Steve and Kayla-
Who doesn't love Patch and Sweetness?  You have to appreciate a woman who wouldn't give up on her husband even after he's presumed dead...for over a decade.  The couple's balance between stoicisms and compassion is what makes them great.  My only complaint is that they can get a little boring when they are not presented with a juicy story line.  Unlike Sami and EJ, I couldn't watch these two read a phone book.
Couple Grade= A-

Chelsea and Nick-
These two definitely got it right.  Neither of them need to change at all to make them a great couple.  Their problems come into play when Nick tries to act self righteous or Chelsea tries to act like she doesn't need Nick.  All it all, these two are a good young love story.  Time will tell if they can keep it together.
Couple Grade= B+

   Max and Stephanie-
It should be noted that I am including them in the list as a couple- a big step for me.  Yes, they are related.  And, viewers do not want to forget that.  But, Darin and Shelley look great and act great together.  At this point, it's going to take a great (and I mean super-above-all-others-love-fest-for-the-ages) story line to get these two into supercouple status- especially when most viewers can list a plethora of other pairs for each party.  Update: I found a picture of them together.
Couple Grade= C-

  Bo and Hope
- They were my pick for favorite couple of 2007 and they still remain my favorite couple today.  One of the main reasons is that I like both characters individually.  They can go out, separate from each other, and hold their own story line without having to be around the other all the time.  Isn't that what makes a successful relationship in real life?
Couple Grade= A+

  Tony and Anna-
I adore this couple.  They manage to mingle upper crust sophistication with downright slapstick comedy.  They get left over story lines, side bar lines, and minor roles- yet these two still keep me entertained every time they are on screen.
Couple Grade= A+

  Philip and Chloe (Version 2.0)-
I like the second reincarnation much better that the trial run.  Phillip is older and grown into his delicious Kiriakis genes.  Chloe is getting better.  Problem is, she's still married and still kinda boring.  If this couple is going to make if off the ground, Chloe needs to change her marital status and get a little more "punch" in her step.
Couple Grade= C
